Digital Diary or Written Diary: Clearing Up the Myths

Drivers hear plenty of stories about digital work diaries, from constant tracking to lost hours. Most of them don't hold up. Here's the comparison, myth by myth.

Two Legal Diaries, One Set of Rules

A driver of a fatigue-regulated heavy vehicle who needs a work diary can keep it on paper or in a digital diary, provided the digital one is an NHVR approved EWD. The work and rest limits are identical either way.

What changes is the method. The written diary is filled in by hand in 15-minute blocks. A digital diary records each entry with a tap, to the minute, and works out the time remaining.

Logmaster is one of the digital diaries the NHVR has approved, and it runs on the Android and Apple phones drivers already carry.

Myths Drivers Hear About Digital Diaries

These come up in almost every changeover conversation.
Minute-by-minute logging icon

"The boss will track me all day"

Logmaster captures location only when an entry is made and doesn't follow the driver in between.
Less paperwork icon

"No signal means no diary"

The app keeps recording offline and syncs once the phone reconnects.
Fatigue breach alert icon

"One wrong tap and I'm in breach"

Entries can be corrected before End of Day sign-off, and a breach is only recorded at that point.
Offline mode icon

"I'll need a special device"

Because its approval is device agnostic, Logmaster works on everyday Android 7+ and iOS 12.5.5+ hardware.

"Digital is now compulsory"

It isn't. An EWD is optional and the written diary remains legal.

Myths Operators Hear

Office staff have their own set of worries.

"Any app will do"

Only an NHVR approved EWD can replace the written diary. A timesheet or notes app can't.

"Going digital hands the risk to the provider"

NHVR guidance says the operator and the provider share record keeping responsibility.

"Digital means no more breaches"

An EWD warns early and counts accurately, but drivers and schedulers still have to act on the warnings.

"The data goes everywhere"

Logmaster doesn't share data without permission and holds ISO 27001 certification.

"We'd have to switch everyone at once"

Paper and digital drivers can run side by side, with paper workbook entry for breach checks.

"It's only for big fleets"

Owner drivers use the same app, and multi-company drivers can send logs to each employer.

Hear from Our Users

Ray A.

First day with Logmaster was to my surprise was user friendly. Josh was very thorough in taking me through all the steps in setting up the Logmaster app. I would recommend Logmaster to all drivers regardless of age. Never have to worry about making a mistake as it tells you if you are. Great customer service after hours support is second to none.

Mike H.

Have started using Logmaster after trying 3 other models. I actually enjoy using it. Very easy to use and follow and the help if you need it is top notch by the developer. Does everything by the minute and works when no service is available. My system is customised for me and fits well with my system (I’m WA). Cost is on par with two of the other ones looked at.
