What an Electronic Work Diary Really Costs

The price on a quote is only part of what an electronic work diary costs. This page walks through each cost factor honestly, so you can compare an EWD with paper on your own numbers.

The Cost Factors in Plain Terms

An EWD's cost is made up of the provider's charges, the devices drivers use, the mobile data those devices need and the time it takes to set up and train people.

Against that sits the cost of the written diary: buying books, but more often the time spent checking, correcting and filing pages, and the risk of breaches found too late.

Logmaster doesn't publish set prices. Operators request pricing through the Logmaster website and get a quote for their fleet.

Costs on the Driver's Side

These are the costs that show up in the cab.
Minute-by-minute logging icon

The device

Drivers can use their own Android or Apple phone if it meets the minimum version, so there may be no hardware cost at all.
Less paperwork icon

A dedicated tablet

Fleets that want a device that stays with the truck can buy tablets and truck mounts through Logmaster.
Fatigue breach alert icon

Mobile data

The app syncs entries over the mobile network, although it keeps recording offline. Logmaster also lists its own E-Sim among its products, so ask the team whether it suits your fleet.

Time on entries

Each change of activity is a tap, compared with filling in a grid by hand.

Time lost to rounding

Counting to the minute means drivers aren't giving away time by rounding to 15-minute blocks.

Costs on the Office Side

For record keepers, most of the difference is measured in hours.

The subscription

Ask any provider how charges are calculated and what's included, such as the portal, support and training.

Setup and training

Allow time for drivers and record keepers to learn the system before go-live.

Device management

If you supply devices, someone has to manage them. Logmaster lists a Mobile Device Management product you can ask about.

Diary checking

Reviewing paper diaries by hand takes time that live alerts in a portal can replace.

Storage

Records must be kept for three years, which is boxes of carbon copies on paper and a cloud system with an EWD.

Breaches caught late

A breach spotted weeks later in a paper audit is harder to address than one flagged on the day.

Electronic Work Diary vs Paper Logbook

Comparing paper and electronic diaries on cost works best when time is counted alongside money.

How It Works

To work out what an EWD would cost your business, follow these steps.
Step 1

Count drivers

Note how many drivers need a work diary and how many work for more than one company.
Step 2

Check devices

Find out which drivers have compatible phones and where you'd need tablets.
Step 3

Estimate admin time

Time how long your team spends checking and filing written diaries each week.
Step 4

Request pricing

Ask Logmaster for a quote through the pricing request on its website.
Step 5

Add setup time

Include training time for drivers and record keepers.
Step 6

Compare

Set the total against what paper costs you in books, time and risk.

Hear from Our Users

Ray A.

First day with Logmaster was to my surprise was user friendly. Josh was very thorough in taking me through all the steps in setting up the Logmaster app. I would recommend Logmaster to all drivers regardless of age. Never have to worry about making a mistake as it tells you if you are. Great customer service after hours support is second to none.

Mike H.

Have started using Logmaster after trying 3 other models. I actually enjoy using it. Very easy to use and follow and the help if you need it is top notch by the developer. Does everything by the minute and works when no service is available. My system is customised for me and fits well with my system (I’m WA). Cost is on par with two of the other ones looked at.
