What Is EWD in Australia?

EWD stands for electronic work diary: a digital work diary, approved by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, that heavy vehicle drivers use to record work and rest under the Heavy Vehicle National Law.

The NHVR only approves an EWD once it can record work and rest accurately, store the records securely and display them to an authorised officer during a roadside check.

Using one is optional: drivers who must keep a work diary can choose an approved EWD or the written National Driver Work Diary. Logmaster is one of the EWDs the NHVR has approved.

What Drivers Like About Logmaster

If you're new to electronic work diaries, Logmaster is an easy first one. The screens are plain, rest reminders arrive on time and the record holds up at any check.
Minute-by-minute logging icon

Exact times, no rounding

An EWD doesn't need to round to the quarter hour the way a paper diary does. Logmaster keeps each minute, so the record is exact and your hours stretch further.
Less paperwork icon

No more paper to chase

Tapping through an entry replaces writing it out, so there are no crossed-out lines or smudged pages. Every week the log sheets go to your record keeper on their own.
Fatigue breach alert icon

Rest reminders that help

The EWD keeps watch on your hours and warns you ahead of a breach, so a counting slip never catches you out.
Offline mode icon

Offline when you need it

When coverage drops, the EWD carries on in offline mode, saving entries to the device and syncing them once you're back in range.
Drivers icon

Designed with working drivers

The screens came out of feedback from people who drive for a living, which is why an EWD entry takes seconds. Company drivers, contractors and owner drivers use it, including those who work for several companies.

What the Office Gets

An EWD is only as good as what the office can see. Logmaster shows every driver's entries as they're made, so you can plan work and step in before a breach.

See every driver, live

With an EWD, the office sees each entry as soon as the driver saves it, including who is working, who is resting and who is close to a limit.

One home for every record

Log sheets arrive each week by themselves, so nobody collects diaries, and the web portal keeps every record filed.

Fewer surprises

Alerts for licence and registration expiry, breach warnings and incident reports give you a chance to act before a small issue grows.

Plan with confidence

See each driver's remaining hours before jobs go out, so there are fewer late reshuffles and fewer runs held up by someone out of time.

Quick to learn

The app carries most of the load, leaving drivers a handful of steps to learn on their first EWD.

Ordinary phones and tablets

Approval for Logmaster isn't tied to one device, so any compatible Apple or Android phone or tablet will do, with no black box to fit.

How It Works

Your first EWD is quicker to set up than you'd expect.
Step 1

Install the app

Put the app on your phone or tablet and work through the setup prompts.
Step 2

Pre‑start and fitness check

Your vehicle pre-start, fitness declaration and other forms are completed in the EWD before the shift begins, the same way each day.
Step 3

Log work and rest

Record every change of activity as it occurs, and the EWD counts your hours against the rule set you work under.
Step 4

Automatic syncing

Entries are stored locally first and pushed to the cloud the next time a connection appears, keeping the record intact out of range.
Step 5

Operator dashboard

Compliance staff watch every driver's EWD live instead of waiting for paper to come back.
Step 6

Reports on demand

Reports for audits or internal reviews come straight out of the portal, with no paper to sort.

Why Operators Pick This EWD

An EWD has to work in the cab, in the office and at audit time. Logmaster is NHVR approved, ISO 27001 certified and relied on by more than 10,000 drivers. PFD Food Services, Cleanaway and Greyhound Australia are among the fleets that use it. It suits a single truck as well as a large fleet, and it is updated as the HVNL changes.

Hear from Our Users

Ray A.

First day with Logmaster was to my surprise was user friendly. Josh was very thorough in taking me through all the steps in setting up the Logmaster app. I would recommend Logmaster to all drivers regardless of age. Never have to worry about making a mistake as it tells you if you are. Great customer service after hours support is second to none.

Mike H.

Have started using Logmaster after trying 3 other models. I actually enjoy using it. Very easy to use and follow and the help if you need it is top notch by the developer. Does everything by the minute and works when no service is available. My system is customised for me and fits well with my system (I’m WA). Cost is on par with two of the other ones looked at.
