Victoria Under the National Law

Victoria was one of the first jurisdictions to adopt the Heavy Vehicle National Law in February 2014. A Victorian driver's log book is therefore the national work diary, written or electronic, kept under the national fatigue rules.

The NHVR has provided heavy vehicle on-road compliance and enforcement services in Victoria since 8 December 2019, taking over that work from VicRoads.

VicRoads kept licensing, registration, the clearing of defect notices and tow truck matters. The written National Driver Work Diary is sold at VicRoads customer service centres.

What Victorian Drivers Need to Know

The daily routine is national. These are the Victorian touchpoints.
Minute-by-minute logging icon

Buying a written diary

The Victorian Department of Transport and Planning directs drivers to VicRoads customer service centres for the national diary.

A lost diary

If a replacement can't be obtained within seven business days, the driver stops driving or moves to duties that don't need a work diary.

Who stops you

Roadside checks of work diaries in Victoria are carried out by NHVR officers, as well as police.

Electronic instead

An NHVR approved EWD such as Logmaster can be used in place of the written diary, with no VicRoads visit.

Interstate runs

Runs into NSW, SA or the ACT stay on the same diary, because the HVNL applies on both sides of the border.

What Victorian Operators Handle

Victorian businesses deal with two agencies, so it helps to know which one owns each record.

NHVR for compliance

On-road enforcement, audits of fatigue records and the national rules all sit with the NHVR.

VicRoads for licences and rego

Licence renewals, registrations and defect clearances are still handled by VicRoads.

Dates in one place

Logmaster holds licence, registration and driver document expiry dates with alerts before they lapse.

Defects reported early

Customisable checklists for vehicle checks and defects let drivers raise problems from the app.

Records for three years

Work diary records are kept for three years and can be exported from the portal when asked.

Mixed paper and electronic

Paper workbook entry lets the office check drivers still using the written diary for breaches.

Electronic Work Diary vs Paper Logbook

Victorian drivers can use either form of the national work diary.
Electronic Work Diary
Paper Logbook
One minute accuracy
Fifteen minute blocks
Automatic syncing
Manual entries
Easy to read and access
Handwriting varies
Real time operator visibility
No live oversight
Secure cloud storage
Can be lost or damaged
Faster audits and reporting
Time consuming
Both are accepted by NHVR officers in Victoria. The electronic diary removes the counter visit and the sums.

Hear from Our Users

Ray A.

First day with Logmaster was to my surprise was user friendly. Josh was very thorough in taking me through all the steps in setting up the Logmaster app. I would recommend Logmaster to all drivers regardless of age. Never have to worry about making a mistake as it tells you if you are. Great customer service after hours support is second to none.

Mike H.

Have started using Logmaster after trying 3 other models. I actually enjoy using it. Very easy to use and follow and the help if you need it is top notch by the developer. Does everything by the minute and works when no service is available. My system is customised for me and fits well with my system (I’m WA). Cost is on par with two of the other ones looked at.
