Standard Hours vs BFM: Side by Side

Standard Hours and Basic Fatigue Management (BFM) set different work and rest limits for solo truck drivers. Since 1 August 2026, BFM is closed to new applicants, but existing accreditations carry on.

Two Hours Options, One Driver

Standard Hours are the default for drivers of fatigue-regulated heavy vehicles. Any driver can work under them without accreditation.

BFM gives more flexibility, including longer daily work, but only to drivers working for an operator with BFM accreditation. Those drivers carry a copy of the accreditation certificate, record the accreditation number and keep a work diary at any distance from base.

BFM is no longer available to new applicants. Operators wanting alternative hours now apply for ACA-Fatigue under the Heavy Vehicle Accreditation scheme, and existing BFM accreditations continue until they expire, are cancelled or the operator transitions.

Electronic Work Diary vs Paper Logbook

How tracking Standard Hours or BFM in an electronic diary compares with paper.
Electronic Work Diary
Paper Logbook
One minute accuracy
Fifteen minute blocks
Automatic syncing
Manual entries
Easy to read and access
Handwriting varies
Real time operator visibility
No live oversight
Secure cloud storage
Can be lost or damaged
Faster audits and reporting
Time consuming
With two sets of rolling limits, the counting gets harder on paper. An EWD applies the right set for the plan the driver selects.

How It Works

Running drivers on Standard Hours and BFM in Logmaster works like this.
Step 1

Check your accreditation

Find your BFM certificate and note its expiry date.
Step 2

Assign each driver

Put drivers on Standard, BFM or BFM Two-up plans in the app.
Step 3

Record the number

Drivers on BFM record the accreditation number with their diary.
Step 4

Let the app count

Logmaster applies the limits for the selected plan and shows time remaining.
Step 5

Plan for expiry

If BFM lapses, drivers move back to Standard Hours unless the operator has moved to ACA-Fatigue.
Step 6

Review the hours

Compare how drivers use each option to see whether alternative hours still suit the work.

Who It's Built For

Operators with an existing BFM accreditation and those weighing ACA-Fatigue both need a clear view of how the options differ.
User Type
Benefit
Truck drivers
Easier logging and clear alerts
Transport operators
Real time visibility and compliance
Compliance managers
Reliable logs for inspections
Owner drivers
No paperwork and simple routines
Subcontractors
Easy switching between employers
In Logmaster, drivers switch between the plans they're entitled to, and the office sees which one each driver used.

Why Operators Track Both Options in Logmaster

Logmaster includes Standard, Standard Two-up, BFM and BFM Two-up plans in one NHVR approved EWD, counting each driver's time to the minute against the plan they select. When an operator's own ACA-Fatigue hours are approved, Logmaster builds the table and applies to the NHVR to add it before switching it on.

Ray A.

First day with Logmaster was to my surprise was user friendly. Josh was very thorough in taking me through all the steps in setting up the Logmaster app. I would recommend Logmaster to all drivers regardless of age. Never have to worry about making a mistake as it tells you if you are. Great customer service after hours support is second to none.

Mike H.

Have started using Logmaster after trying 3 other models. I actually enjoy using it. Very easy to use and follow and the help if you need it is top notch by the developer. Does everything by the minute and works when no service is available. My system is customised for me and fits well with my system (I’m WA). Cost is on par with two of the other ones looked at.
