AFM Accreditation Now: What Holders Need to Know

Advanced Fatigue Management (AFM) is no longer open to new applicants. If your business holds AFM, it carries on under the conditions on your certificate, and planning for what comes next starts now.

Where AFM Stands Under the Amended HVNL

Since 1 August 2026, AFM is no longer available as an accreditation module for new applicants. New applicants use ACA-Fatigue under the Heavy Vehicle Accreditation scheme instead.

Existing AFM accreditations continue under the conditions on the accreditation certificate until they expire, are cancelled or the operator transitions. While they run, drivers keep working to the AFM hours on that certificate.

The old National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme and the new scheme run side by side during the transition, but an operator can only be in one scheme at a time, and any new accreditation type has to come through the new framework.

What AFM Drivers Still Need to Do

Day to day, an AFM driver's obligations haven't changed.

Carry the certificate

Drivers carry a copy of the operator's AFM accreditation certificate.

Record the number

The accreditation number goes with the work diary record.

Keep a diary everywhere

A work diary is needed for fatigue-regulated work at any distance from base.

Work to the certificate

The work and rest hours come from the operator's own AFM approval.

Mark the option

On the written diary, drivers still mark AFM as their hours option.

Planning Ahead as an AFM Holder

With no new AFM applications, holders need a plan for the end of their current accreditation.

Know your expiry date

When AFM expires, its benefits end from that date unless the operator has moved across.

Align your modules

The NHVR is requiring operators to align modules to one common expiry date, and the first expiry triggers the transition approach.

Start with GSA

General Safety Accreditation is the foundation of the new scheme and a prerequisite for ACA-Fatigue.

Prepare a safety case

ACA-Fatigue applications include a safety case and a Fatigue Risk Management System.

Choose your hours

Use one of the NHVR's ten templated Tables of Hours or propose your own.

Book audits early

Audit applications must be submitted at least 28 days before the audit, and GSA and ACA audits can be done together.

Electronic Work Diary vs Paper Logbook

How keeping AFM records in an electronic diary compares with paper.
Electronic Work Diary
Paper Logbook
One minute accuracy
Fifteen minute blocks
Automatic syncing
Manual entries
Easy to read and access
Handwriting varies
Real time operator visibility
No live oversight
Secure cloud storage
Can be lost or damaged
Faster audits and reporting
Time consuming
AFM hours are specific to each operator, which makes accurate counting on paper harder. An EWD that knows your plan does the sums.

How It Works

Running AFM drivers in Logmaster while you plan your next step works like this.
Step 1

Confirm your AFM plan

Tell the team about your current AFM accreditation so drivers use the right plan.
Step 2

Set drivers up

Drivers install the app and select the AFM plan.
Step 3

Record as they work

Work and rest are logged to the minute against the AFM hours.
Step 4

Review in the portal

The office checks hours and potential breaches as they come in.
Step 5

Plan the move

When you apply for ACA-Fatigue, contact Logmaster so your approved table can be built.
Step 6

Keep the records

Hold AFM records for at least three years, and accreditation evidence for the life of the accreditation.

Why AFM Operators Keep Their Records in Logmaster

AFM is one of the fatigue plans built into Logmaster's NHVR approved EWD, alongside Standard Hours and BFM. Operators moving to ACA-Fatigue get each approved table built, tested and submitted to the NHVR to be added to the EWD before drivers can select it.

Hear from Our Users

Ray A.

First day with Logmaster was to my surprise was user friendly. Josh was very thorough in taking me through all the steps in setting up the Logmaster app. I would recommend Logmaster to all drivers regardless of age. Never have to worry about making a mistake as it tells you if you are. Great customer service after hours support is second to none.

Mike H.

Have started using Logmaster after trying 3 other models. I actually enjoy using it. Very easy to use and follow and the help if you need it is top notch by the developer. Does everything by the minute and works when no service is available. My system is customised for me and fits well with my system (I’m WA). Cost is on par with two of the other ones looked at.
