Why Approval Is the First Question

A logbook app, a timesheet or a telematics report can be useful, but none of them is a work diary unless the NHVR has approved it against its EWD Standards.

A driver who relies on an unapproved app in place of a work diary hasn't kept a work diary at all. The written diary or an approved EWD are the only two legal options.

Approval belongs to the system and its approval holder, not to the device the app runs on, and the NHVR keeps a public register of approved EWDs.

Which fatigue plans are switched on?

Confirm the system runs the hours your drivers work under, including bus, two-up, exemption or WA plans.

What about ACA‑Fatigue?

Each operator's ACA-Fatigue hours are approved individually, so ask how the provider adds an approved table to its EWD.

How are records kept?

Record keepers must be able to reach three years of a driver's records, so ask where they're stored and how you export them.

What happens offline?

The standards require the EWD to keep working without coverage. Ask to see it.

What if a device fails?

Ask how faults are reported and how the provider helps you meet your malfunction obligations.

Who trains drivers?

The operator and provider are both expected to train drivers before they use the EWD, so ask what's included.

How can I tell if a logbook app is NHVR approved?

Search the NHVR's list of approved electronic work diaries for the product and the company that holds the approval. If it isn't there, it can't replace the written work diary, however good the app is.

Is a GPS or telematics report the same as an approved work diary?

No. Vehicle location data can help with compliance, but it isn't a work diary unless the system has NHVR approval as an EWD. Logmaster pairs location data from connected telematics with its approved EWD records, but the diary is the approved part.

Does NHVR approval mean the regulator recommends that product?

No. The NHVR approves systems that meet its EWD Standards, but it doesn't endorse particular products. That's why the provider questions matter as much as the approval.

Does an approved EWD automatically cover my ACA‑Fatigue hours?

No. An operator's ACA-Fatigue certificate approves its hours, not the provider's system. Logmaster builds and tests each approved table and applies to the NHVR to add it, so contact the team when you apply.

Can an EWD lose its approval?
