Fatigue Management in Western Australia for Operators

Western Australia manages commercial driver fatigue through work health and safety law, not the HVNL. For an operator, that means a fatigue plan, trained and medically fit drivers and records you can produce.

How WA Handles Driver Fatigue

In WA, WorkSafe WA administers fatigue for commercial vehicle drivers under the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 and Part 4.10 of the Work Health and Safety (General) Regulations 2022. Drivers must drive in line with regulation 184D, which sets the operating standard.

The person conducting the business or undertaking carries the main duties. They need a driver fatigue management plan, training for every driver, drivers certified as medically fit to drive a commercial vehicle, and records of each driver's work time, breaks and non-work time.

Under WA Department of Transport guidance, a vehicle over 12 tonnes, or a bus built for more than 12 adults, needs the National Driver Work Diary once it's driven outside WA and the NT. For trips within WA, a work diary isn't required, but the driving record still is.

What a WA Operator Needs in Place

The business side of WA fatigue management is about planning, people and paperwork.

A fatigue management plan

A written plan setting out how driver fatigue is managed across rosters, trips and breaks.

Training for every driver

WorkSafe WA expects all drivers to be trained, and offers a free resource for drivers and supervisors.

Medicals on file

Each driver is certified as medically fit, using the Austroads forms the driver and doctor complete.

Driver records kept

Records of work time, breaks and non-work time for each driver, ready to produce when asked.

A plan for the border

Trucks over 12 tonnes and larger buses leaving WA switch to HVNL rules and the National Driver Work Diary.

Expiry dates watched

Medical certificates and licences need renewing on time, or drivers fall outside the requirements.

Electronic Work Diary vs Paper Logbook

How keeping WA driving records electronically compares with paper.
Electronic Work Diary
Paper Logbook
One minute accuracy
Fifteen minute blocks
Automatic syncing
Manual entries
Easy to read and access
Handwriting varies
Real time operator visibility
No live oversight
Secure cloud storage

WA doesn't require an EWD. An electronic record simply makes the driving record easier to keep and to produce.

Hear from Our Users

Ray A.

First day with Logmaster was to my surprise was user friendly. Josh was very thorough in taking me through all the steps in setting up the Logmaster app. I would recommend Logmaster to all drivers regardless of age. Never have to worry about making a mistake as it tells you if you are. Great customer service after hours support is second to none.

Mike H.

Have started using Logmaster after trying 3 other models. I actually enjoy using it. Very easy to use and follow and the help if you need it is top notch by the developer. Does everything by the minute and works when no service is available. My system is customised for me and fits well with my system (I’m WA). Cost is on par with two of the other ones looked at.
