The NHVR EWD Framework in Practice

The NHVR sets the standards every electronic work diary has to meet. This page looks at what those standards mean on a working day: at a roadside intercept, when a device fails and when a driver moves off the written diary.

How the Framework Fits Together

The NHVR publishes EWD Standards that set out what an electronic work diary must do. A technology provider whose system meets them is granted an approval and becomes the approval holder, and the system is entered on the NHVR's register.

Approval can come with conditions set by the NHVR, and approved systems can be audited and reassessed.

Inside a fleet, three parties share the load: the driver who records work and rest, the record keeper who holds the records, and the provider whose system does the recording.

What Drivers Notice on the Road

The standards shape a few moments every EWD driver will recognise.
Minute-by-minute logging icon

Compliance View at an intercept

When an officer asks to see the diary, the EWD shows a read-only Compliance View with a grid similar to the written diary, which the driver hands over to view.
Less paperwork icon

No remote watching

NHVR material says officers won't monitor a driver's work and rest remotely through the EWD.
Fatigue breach alert icon

28 days on the device

The last 28 days of records must be viewable at the roadside, even without a mobile connection.
Offline mode icon

Working through dead zones

Without coverage the EWD keeps every function that doesn't need a connection and syncs once signal returns.

Warnings about faults

The system has to warn the driver if it can't connect to the provider, and to detect when critical equipment is removed.

When an EWD Stops Working

A failure that stops the diary recording counts as a malfunction. NHVR guidance for record keepers sets out the steps.

Driver tells the record keeper

A driver must notify their record keeper within two business days if the EWD isn't working, is full, or is lost, stolen or destroyed.

Record keeper tells the NHVR

The record keeper notifies the NHVR within two business days of becoming aware of the malfunction.

Supplementary records

The record keeper directs the driver to use supplementary records until the EWD is working again.

Recent history handed back

Any of the driver's records from the last 28 days that the new or repaired EWD doesn't hold are given to the driver in a readily accessible form.

Repairs on time

The record keeper makes sure the EWD is examined and brought back into working order within the period the NHVR requires.

Manuals from the provider

Training and operating manuals come from the technology provider, since the NHVR can't advise on how a particular EWD is used.

Electronic Work Diary vs Paper Logbook

How It Works

Moving a driver from the written diary to an EWD follows a set order.
Step 1

Train first

The operator and provider train the driver on their obligations and on the EWD itself before it's used.
Step 2

Bring the past 28 days

The driver carries their last 28 days of written diary records during the changeover.
Step 3

Enter historic data

The record keeper may enter the driver's earlier work and rest into the EWD as historic data.
Step 4

Set the base time zone

Confirm the base and its time zone so every count starts from the right clock.
Step 5

Record from the next shift

The driver logs work and rest in the EWD instead of the book.
Step 6

Keep both if swapping

A driver who moves between the two diaries carries both sets of records.

Ray A.

First day with Logmaster was to my surprise was user friendly. Josh was very thorough in taking me through all the steps in setting up the Logmaster app. I would recommend Logmaster to all drivers regardless of age. Never have to worry about making a mistake as it tells you if you are. Great customer service after hours support is second to none.

Mike H.

Have started using Logmaster after trying 3 other models. I actually enjoy using it. Very easy to use and follow and the help if you need it is top notch by the developer. Does everything by the minute and works when no service is available. My system is customised for me and fits well with my system (I’m WA). Cost is on par with two of the other ones looked at.
